Chapter One

The Count

Wren had counted the steps to the lamp room four hundred times, and every time the number came out different. Tonight it was one hundred and twelve.

She climbed anyway. The lamp room was cold. The great lens waited in its brass cradle, patient, the way it had waited every night since the storm.

Chapter II · Chap, an Assistant

Help when you ask. Silence when you don’t.

Chap is the AI assistant built into Chapterly. Select a passage and ask for sensory detail, dialogue or a simpler sentence, or let it carry on from your cursor. It suggests; you decide.

Chapter three · The Stranger

Wren, who had not expected anyone at all at such an hour, and certainly not on a night like this one, opened the door, whereupon she saw that there stood a man who was, as far as she could tell, completely soaked through.

✦The Stranger

Wren opened the door to a wall of salt wind. A man stood on the step, rain running from his collar in thin silver threads, and the cold smell of the sea came in with him.

“You’re soaked,” she said, one hand still on the door. Behind her the lamp turned and turned, and for a moment its light found his face.

‹Chapter 12 · The Second LightAa

The Second Light

The light came back on the second night.

Wren saw it from the kitchen window: a slow white sweep across the water where there should have been nothing but dark. She counted the turns. Eight seconds. Her father’s light kept eight seconds.

She took the lantern and the key the stranger had given her, and she climbed. One hundred and eleven steps. One fewer again.

At the top, the lamp room door stood open, and someone had laid two cups on the chart table, one of them still warm.
