Understanding Blood Elf names
Blood elves were high elves until the Scourge destroyed the Sunwell and much of Quel'Thalas in Warcraft III. Prince Kael'thas Sunstrider renamed the survivors sin'dorei, "children of the blood," in honor of the dead and of his royal line. Their names still sound like the old kingdom: long, polished and full of l, r and th, often split by an apostrophe in lore, as in Kael'thas and Lor'themar.
Surnames are where the culture shows. Old Quel'Thalas families carry English compound surnames about the sun, light and speed: Sunstrider, Windrunner, Brightwing, Dawnseeker, Sunreaver. Other leaders go by a given name and a title, like Lady Liadrin or Grand Magister Rommath. In World of Warcraft itself, character names can't include apostrophes or spaces, so a name you can actually use is one word of up to 12 letters: Sellandra, Vaelith, Thalorin.
How to come up with a Blood Elf name
Use the Thalassian sound
Blood elf names share their roots with the high elves of Quel'Thalas. Common front pieces are Kael-, Lor-, Ael-, Thal- and Vael-; common endings are -thas, -dor, -rin, -ien and -elle. Join two and smooth the seam: Vael plus -thas gives Vaelthas, Lor plus -ien gives Lorien, Ael plus -elle gives Aelelle (shorten it to Aelle). Thalassian also has words you can borrow outright, like belore, "the sun," from the phrase Anu belore dela'na, "the sun guides us."
Pick a surname that says something
Quel'Thalas family names join an image to a deed: Sun plus strider, Wind plus runner, Bright plus wing, Dawn plus seeker. Build yours from light, sun, flame or flight plus an action or object, and match it to the character. A Farstrider ranger suits Swiftarrow. A magister suits Spellbloom or Embersong. A Blood Knight suits Dawnblade. Short, plain surnames exist too, like Lor'themar Theron's, and they make a character sound older and less showy.
Paladins, mages and rogues
Class shapes the name. The Blood Knights, the paladin order Lady Liadrin leads, first drew holy power by draining the captured naaru M'uru, and their names carry gravity: one strong name plus a rank, like Knight-Commander Selaria. Mages and warlocks can go ornate, after Kael'thas, the Blood Mage hero of Warcraft III: Aelthas, Vaedrin, Selendris. Rogues and hunters do better with names that are quick to type in a group: Vael, Lyra, Sorin, Kelith.
Make it work in the game
World of Warcraft names must be 2 to 12 letters, with no spaces, numbers or apostrophes, no capitals after the first letter, and no letter three times in a row. Accented letters are allowed, so Kaëlis or Sílvara can stand in for the apostrophe a lore name would use. A straight copy like Kaelthas reads as a fan tribute, which is fine if that's what you want. Otherwise borrow the structure: Kael'thas becomes Caelvar, and Lor'themar becomes Lorathen.
Blood elves from Warcraft lore
The names Blizzard gave its sin'dorei leaders show the whole naming system: given names, apostrophes, compound surnames and titles.
- Kael'thas SunstriderThe last prince of Quel'Thalas, who renamed his people blood elves, and the Blood Mage hero of Warcraft III. Sunstrider is the royal surname every compound blood elf surname echoes.
- Lor'themar TheronRegent Lord of Quel'Thalas after Kael'thas. The apostrophe splits a three-syllable given name, and the short surname Theron shows not every blood elf needs a compound.
- Lady LiadrinMatriarch of the Blood Knights and the most famous blood elf paladin. She goes by given name and title alone, and the title does the work a surname would.
- Grand Magister RommathHead of Silvermoon's magisters. Another single-name leader: for blood elf mages, a rank like magister or spellbreaker can replace a family name entirely.
- Halduron BrightwingRanger-General of Silvermoon. Brightwing is a model ranger surname, a light word plus a flight word, and Halduron shows the -on ending common to male names.
- Aethas SunreaverThe archmage who led the Sunreavers, the blood elf mages of Dalaran. His surname became the faction's name, which is a neat trick for your own guilds and orders.
- Valeera SanguinarThe blood elf rogue of the Warcraft comics and Hearthstone. Sanguinar echoes Latin sanguis, blood, so her surname quietly names her people.

Blood Elf names: frequently asked questions
What are good female blood elf names?
Aim for two or three syllables with a soft ending in -a, -is or -elle: Liadrin, Selama, Alysra, Lireesa, Lyndra, Sellandra. For a Blood Knight, pair one firm name with a rank: Lady Selaria. One correction to the table: Vereesa is Vereesa Windrunner, a high elf of the Alliance and Sylvanas's sister, not a blood elf, so she's a lore borrow rather than a sin'dorei name.
What are good male blood elf names?
Male blood elf names end in -thas, -dor, -on or -rin: Thalorien, Aethas, Rommath, Vaedrin, Silgryn, Astalor. Several names in the table belong to famous lore characters: Kael'thas, Lor'themar, Anasterian (Kael'thas's father, the king) and Rommath. Fine for a roleplay nod, but for your own character, change the root: Anasterian becomes Anaveron, Rommath becomes Rothmar.
What are good blood elf paladin names?
Blood Knights favor names with weight and a title, and Lady Liadrin is the model. Try Selaria Dawnblade, Vaedrin Sunshield, Aelthara or Thalorin. Light and dawn surnames suit the order: lore's Thalorien Dawnseeker, the hero who carried the sword Quel'Delar against the Scourge at the Sunwell, set the pattern players recognize. For a female blood elf paladin, a firm two-syllable name like Kelira keeps her from sounding like a mage.
What are good blood elf last names?
Use English compounds of light or sun plus a deed or object, as Warcraft does: Sunstrider, Windrunner, Brightwing, Dawnseeker, Sunreaver. New ones built the same way: Sunweaver, Dawnmantle, Emberwind, Goldspire, Swiftarrow. WoW won't let you put a surname in your character name, so most players keep it for roleplay. A short, flat surname like Theron is also in keeping with lore and reads as old family rather than flashy.
How are blood elf, high elf and void elf names different?
In World of Warcraft they come from the same people, so the names sound alike. Quel'dorei, "children of noble birth," are the high elves; sin'dorei, "children of the blood," are the blood elves; ren'dorei, "children of the Void," are the void elves. Ren'dorei in the table is that race name, not a personal name. Mark a void elf through the surname instead: Vaelith Duskwhisper rather than Vaelith Sunstrider.
Are blood elf name meanings real Thalassian?
Mostly not. Blizzard has published Thalassian phrases, not a dictionary of personal names, so meanings like Liadrin, "Radiant Sun," are English glosses. Real phrases you can use in roleplay or a character profile: Bal'a dash, malanore ("Greetings, traveler"), Shorel'aran ("Farewell"), Selama ashal'anore ("Justice for our people") and Anu belore dela'na ("The sun guides us").
