About Dark Elf names

Understanding Dark Elf names

Most dark elf names people look for come from two places. In R.A. Salvatore's Forgotten Realms novels, the drow of Menzoberranzan have spiky, consonant-heavy names: Drizzt, Zaknafein, Jarlaxle, Gromph. Women rule drow society as priestesses of the spider goddess Lolth, and their names run longer and more formal: Yvonnel, Quenthel, Vierna, Sos'Umptu. Every drow also carries a house name, such as Do'Urden, Baenre or Xorlarrin, and the house matters more than the person.

The Dunmer of The Elder Scrolls sound different. Their names lean on the letter y, doubled letters and soft openings like Ll and Dr: Brelyna Maryon, Teldryn Sero, Irileth, Neloth, Divayth Fyr. Original dark elves can borrow from either. Hard z, x and zz sounds read as drow; ll, y and -eth read as Dunmer. Pick one sound family per culture so your characters sound related.

A short guide

How to come up with a Dark Elf name

Start with hard sounds

Drow names in Salvatore's books bunch hard consonants together and use z and x freely: Drizzt, Dinin, Masoj, Rizzen. Two syllables is the norm for men. Build your own the same way: a sharp opening (Dr, Z, X, Ry, V), a short vowel, and a clipped ending (-zt, -in, -ar, -ax). Ryltar, Vornal and Xyrvain from the table all follow that pattern. Skip soft endings like -iel and -wen for drow. They belong to surface elves and will make a villain sound like he lives in Rivendell.

Give women longer names and titles

Drow society is a matriarchy, and Salvatore's female names carry weight: Malice, Briza, Vierna, Quenthel, Triel. Three syllables and a vowel ending (-a, -el, -ra) work well, as in Ilvara, Xyndra or Shyntlara. Rank comes as a title, not a name. The head of a house is its matron, as with Matron Malice Do'Urden, and the ruler of the First House is Matron Mother Baenre. For a female drow villain, the title tells readers how much power she has before she says a word.

Invent the house first

In Menzoberranzan, a drow's house is their politics, their army and often their killer. House names mix apostrophes, capitals and odd joins: Do'Urden, Barrison Del'Armgo, Hun'ett, Xorlarrin, DeVir. Write the house before the character, give it a rank among its rivals, and keep the given name short. "Zyndar of House Vel'kyrr" tells a reader more than any meaning could. If you use an apostrophe, put it where you want a break in pronunciation, and stop at one per name.

Building a Dunmer name

Dunmer names in The Elder Scrolls have their own rules. Given names favor y, doubled vowels and liquid openings: Llevule, Aryon, Dravynea, Brelyna. Family names are short and flat: Sero, Maryon, Arano, Sarethi. In Morrowind, members of a Great House sometimes put the house first, as in Indoril Nerevar or Hlaalu Athyn Llethan. Put the pieces together for a Skyrim character: Aldryn Velas for a male battlemage, Tirasa Hlervu for a female thief.

Famous names

Dark elves readers and players know

These characters set the patterns most dark elf names follow, from Salvatore's drow to Bethesda's Dunmer.

  • Drizzt Do'UrdenSalvatore's drow ranger, first seen in The Crystal Shard (1988). The zz and hard stop made Drizzt the template for drow names, and Do'Urden shows the house identity every drow carries.
  • Zaknafein Do'UrdenDrizzt's father and the house weapons master. Four syllables of sharp consonants with no apostrophe: proof a drow name can be long without getting fussy.
  • Matron Malice Do'UrdenDrizzt's mother and the head of House Do'Urden. Her title does more work than her name, which is how rank works in drow society: female, and stated first.
  • Jarlaxle BaenreLeader of the mercenary band Bregan D'aerthe. The x and doubled l make the name hard to forget, and Baenre ties him to the First House of Menzoberranzan.
  • Minthara BaenreThe drow paladin in Baldur's Gate 3. Her given name follows the female pattern of three syllables ending in -a, and her house name links her to Menzoberranzan's ruling family.
  • Brelyna MaryonA Dunmer apprentice at the College of Winterhold in Skyrim. The y in her given name and the short, flat surname are typical of Dunmer naming.
  • NelothThe Telvanni wizard of Skyrim's Dragonborn expansion. Many Dunmer go by a single given name, and a Telvanni master who has lived for centuries doesn't need more.
  • Indoril NerevarThe great hero of Dunmer legend in The Elder Scrolls. Putting the Great House name, Indoril, before the given name marks noble standing in Morrowind.

Dark Elf names: frequently asked questions

What are good female dark elf names?

For drow, go long and formal: Ilvara, Xyndra, Shyntlara, Laelithra, or Salvatore's own Vierna and Quenthel. Add a title and a house to show rank: Matron Ilvara of House Mizzrym. For Skyrim-style Dunmer women, use y and soft liquids instead: Brelyna, Irileth, Jenassa, Dravynea. Female drow work well as villains because the title carries the menace, so the name itself can stay elegant.

What are good male dark elf names?

Keep them short and hard: Veldrin, Ryltar, Vornal, Zyndar, Xyrvain. Salvatore's drow men follow the same pattern: Dinin, Gromph, Masoj, Rizzen. Male drow rank below the priestesses, so a title such as weapons master or archmage (Archmage Gromph Baenre) shows that a man has fought for his place. Dunmer men sound softer: Athis, Erandur, Neloth, Teldryn.

How do I make a Dunmer name for Skyrim?

Use Dunmer sounds, not drow ones. Skyrim's dark elves have names like Brelyna Maryon, Teldryn Sero, Revyn Sadri and Avrusa Sarethi: a given name with y or a doubled vowel, then a short two-syllable surname. Ll and Dr openings (Llevar, Drelas) sound right; z and x do not. A drow-style name like Xyrvain will look out of place in Windhelm's Gray Quarter.

Do dark elf names have real meanings?

Not in the books or games. Salvatore never published translations for Drizzt or Zaknafein, and Bethesda doesn't translate Dunmer names. The meanings on this page, such as Veldrin, "Night's Whisper," or Xyndra, "Nightshade," are English glosses to help you match a name to a character. If you're building a language, treat them as roots: if Xyn- means shade, Xynral can be a shadow mage.

Can I use Drizzt or other names from the novels?

In a home D&D game, sure. In fiction you plan to publish, no: Drizzt, Zaknafein and Jarlaxle are Salvatore's characters, and fantasy readers will recognize them. Changing one letter doesn't help, since Drozzt still reads as Drizzt. Borrow the structure instead. A hard two-syllable name with a z (Vizzar, Ralzen) plus an invented house gives you the same flavor without the copy.

What makes a good evil elf or dark elf assassin name?

Short, quiet and easy to whisper: Vyx, Ryl, Nerath, Ilvra. Assassins often work under an alias, so give the character a house-born name and a working name: Xyrvain Tlinzar, called the Quiet Knife. Menace comes from what a name is attached to, not from stacking x's. Jarlaxle sounds playful, and his reputation is what makes him dangerous.
