Understanding Monk names
Real monks give up their birth names. A Chinese Buddhist monk takes the surname Shi, from Shijiamouni (Shakyamuni), a custom the monk Dao'an pushed in the fourth century so no monk outranked another by family. Vietnamese monks use the same character, written Thích. Tibetan monastics receive names like Tenzin or Gyatso at ordination. A Catholic monk or friar often takes a religious name: Johann Mendel became Gregor when he joined the Augustinians in Brno.
That gives you two layers to work with: a religious name that says what the monk aims for, and a title or epithet that says what the world calls them. Sanskrit and Pali words carry the first layer well, which is why this list includes Bodhi (awakening), Padma (lotus) and Vajra (diamond, thunderbolt). The second layer is where fantasy monks get their edge: Brother Ash, Sister Wren, Iron Palm Lian, the Silent Abbot of the Northern Gate.
How to come up with a Monk name
Pick one tradition and stay inside it
A monk's name tells readers where they trained, so keep the parts from one culture. A Shaolin-style monk gets Chinese syllables: Shi Yanlong. A Tibetan-style monk gets two Tibetan names, like Tenzin Norbu (norbu means jewel) or Karma Dawa (dawa means moon). A Thai forest monk goes by a teacher's title and a short name, as in Ajahn Chah. A Benedictine-style monk gets a saint's name and Brother or Dom. A Sanskrit given name with a Gaelic surname reads as a mistake unless your setting explains it.
Build a Shaolin generation name
Shaolin monks share a generation character taken from a 70-character poem written by the abbot Xueting Fuyu in the 13th century. Each generation takes the next character in the poem: De, then Xing, then Yong, then Yan, then Heng. That's why Shi Yanming and Shi Heng Yi wear their generation in the middle syllable. To build your own, combine Shi, a generation character and a personal one: Shi Yanlong (long means dragon) or Shi Hengjing (jing means quiet). Two monks with the same middle syllable are brothers in the lineage.
Put the virtue in the name and the violence in the epithet
Monastic names point at an ideal. Bodhi, Padma and Tara work for a contemplative monk. For a warrior monk, keep the serene name and let the epithet carry the threat: Bodhi Stonefist, Brother Tobias of the Iron Bell. The gap between a gentle name and a lethal reputation says more than a name like Deathpunch. Funny monk names use the same gap in reverse: Brother Maynard in Monty Python and the Holy Grail is funny because he reads the Book of Armaments with total solemnity.
Add a title
Titles give rank and culture before anything else. Buddhist: Venerable, Ajahn (Thai, teacher), Lama, Roshi (a Japanese Zen teacher), Ani (Tibetan, used for nuns). Christian: Brother, Father, Abbot, Prior, Sister, Abbess, Mother Superior. In D&D, borrow from the monk's tradition: a Way of Shadow monk might go by one word like Hush, while a Way of the Open Hand master keeps a full name and a title. In early Dungeons & Dragons the highest monk rank was Grand Master of Flowers, which still makes a great title for an abbot NPC.
Famous monks and what their names show
Real and fictional monks whose names show how monastic naming works.
- BodhidharmaCredited by tradition with bringing Chan (Zen) Buddhism to China and linked by legend to Shaolin. His name joins bodhi, awakening, with dharma, teaching. Japan shortened it to Daruma.
- Thích Nhất HạnhThích is the Vietnamese monastic surname, honoring the Buddha's Shakya clan. He translated Nhất Hạnh as 'one action,' a reminder to concentrate on one thing.
- Tenzin GyatsoThe 14th Dalai Lama, born Lhamo Thondup. Gyatso means ocean in Tibetan, and Dalai is Mongolian for ocean, so his monastic name and his title echo each other.
- Pema ChödrönThe American Tibetan Buddhist nun, born Deirdre Blomfield-Brown. Her name means roughly 'lotus lamp of the dharma,' an image plus an ideal: a strong model for female monk names.
- Gregor MendelBorn Johann, he took the name Gregor on joining the Augustinian friars of St. Thomas's Abbey in Brno in 1843. The religious name is the one history remembers.
- Brother CadfaelEllis Peters' Welsh Benedictine detective at 12th-century Shrewsbury Abbey. Brother plus a Welsh name tells you his order, his origin and his place in the community in two words.
- Kwai Chang CaineThe Shaolin-trained hero of the 1970s TV series Kung Fu. His master's nickname for him, Grasshopper, became as famous as his name, which shows how much a teacher's nickname can carry.
- Monk GyatsoAang's mentor in Avatar: The Last Airbender. He carries the real Tibetan name Gyatso, ocean, which ties the Air Nomads to Tibetan Buddhist monasticism.

Monk names: frequently asked questions
What are good female monk names?
Real Buddhist nuns are the best source. Tibetan nuns are addressed as Ani, as in Ani Choying Drolma, and receive names like Pema (lotus), Drolma (the Tibetan name for Tara) and Chödrön (dharma lamp). From this list, Padma, Tara and Chandra (moon) suit a contemplative character. For a Christian setting, use Sister or Mother with a saint's name: Sister Hildegard, Mother Agnes. For a fantasy warrior nun, pair one of these with an epithet, like Pema of the Seven Bells.
What are good male monk names?
For Indian-inspired monks, try Bodhi, Vajra or Ashoka (without sorrow, the name of the Mauryan emperor who spread Buddhism). For Chinese-inspired monks, use Shi plus two syllables, like Shi Yanlong. For Tibetan-inspired monks, Tenzin, Norbu, Dorje or Gyatso. For a European cloister, Brother Anselm, Brother Bede or Dom Cuthbert. In Christian orders a monk is Brother, or Father if he has been ordained a priest.
How do I make a Shaolin monk name?
Start with Shi, the surname all Chinese Buddhist monastics share. Add a generation character from the Shaolin lineage poem, such as Yan or Heng, then a personal character with a meaning you like: Shi Yanlong (dragon), Shi Hengjing (quiet), Shi Yanbai (white). In English you'll see both Shi Yanming and Shi Yan Ming, so pick one spelling style and keep it. Fellow monks of one generation should share the middle syllable.
What are good D&D monk names?
D&D monks don't follow one rule, so start from race and monastery. A human monk from a temple in Kara-Tur, the Forgotten Realms' East Asian-inspired continent, can use Chinese- or Japanese-style names. A dwarven monk might keep a clan name and add a vow name, like Brother Haldur Stillhand. Short epithets suit monks of any race: Ember, Stillwater, Nine Fingers. For a temple's master, early D&D's top monk title, Grand Master of Flowers, is hard to beat.
Do real monks change their names?
In many traditions, yes. Chinese and Vietnamese Buddhist monastics take Shi or Thích as a surname. Tibetan monks and nuns receive a name at ordination, often from their teacher: Pema Chödrön got hers from Chögyam Trungpa. Catholic monks, nuns and friars traditionally took a religious name on entering an order, though many now keep their baptismal name. A character who is known by both a birth name and a monastic name has a story built in.
What are some funny monk names?
Funny monk names work by deflating solemnity. Pair a grand title with a homely name: Abbot Gerald, Venerable Doug. Give a fearsome warrior monk a gentle vow name, like Brother Petal. Job nicknames land well from other characters: Brother Hops for the monastery brewer, Sister Ledger for the one who counts the candles. Keep the rest of the setting straight; Brother Maynard in Monty Python works because nobody around him is joking.
