About Warrior names

Understanding Warrior names

Real warriors were rarely remembered by their given names alone. History kept the nickname: Harald Hardrada, roughly "hard ruler"; Ragnar Lodbrok, "hairy breeches"; Richard the Lionheart. The name was ordinary, and the reputation made it famous. That's the most useful thing to borrow for a fictional fighter.

Plenty of given names already mean war. The old Germanic and Norse naming pools were full of battle words: hild (battle) in Hilda and Matilda, gunnr (war) in Gunnar, wig (war) in Ludwig. Boudica, the Iceni queen who led a revolt against Rome around AD 60, likely took her name from the Celtic word for victory. Warrior names in fiction tend to follow the same sound: two syllables, hard stops, few soft vowels. Conan, Brienne, Garrosh and Kratos all hit a consonant early and stay short enough to shout.

A short guide

How to come up with a Warrior name

Choose a name that is short and hard

Warrior names land best with one or two syllables and a hard consonant: K, G, T, D, R. Male names: Korran, Garrick, Torvek, Brannik, Drustan. Female names: Brienne, Hilde, Veyra, Kestara, Sigrun. Say it the way a sergeant would bark it across a battlefield. If it sounds wrong shouted, it's probably a name for a different class. Save long, flowing names for a duelist or a noble knight.

Borrow names that mean battle

Old languages give you names with built-in meaning. From Old Norse: Gunnar (war, warrior), Sigrun (victory rune), Brynhild (armor and battle). From Old High German: Matilda (mighty in battle), Ludwig and Louis (famous in battle). From Latin: Valeria (to be strong), Marcus (likely from Mars, the god of war). From Greek: Alexander (defender of men). These read as real names first and warrior names second, which is ideal for a grounded setting.

Add an epithet people would actually say

Historical bynames describe something visible or notorious: Ironside, Fairhair, the Lionheart, Bloodaxe. Eric Bloodaxe and Edmund Ironside were both real. Build yours the same way, from a body part, weapon, deed or place: Korran Ironside, Hilde Two-Spears, Torvek of the Salt March, Maelor the Unhorsed. Avoid stacking adjectives, which makes a fighter sound like a wrestling act. One concrete noun, like "Ironside," does more than "Mighty Stormfury Bladeheart."

Fit the name to the fighting style

A disciplined soldier suits a plain name and rank: Sergeant Odran Grey. A berserker suits an animal epithet: Bjorn Wolfcoat. A mercenary suits a company name: Tessara of the Red Pennant. A gladiator suits a stage name the crowd chants: Ruun, the Butcher of Varn. If the warrior is also a leader, give the name some ceremony, the way Brienne of Tarth sounds like a knight long before she becomes one.

Famous names

Famous warriors and what their names show

Real and fictional, the best-known fighters mostly carry a plain name and an earned title.

  • BoudicaQueen of the Iceni who led a revolt against Roman Britain around AD 60. Her name is usually traced to a Celtic word for victory, a warrior name in the literal sense.
  • Harald HardradaKing of Norway, killed at Stamford Bridge in 1066. Hardrada roughly means "hard ruler" or "stern counsel," a byname that describes temperament rather than looks.
  • ÉowynTolkien's shieldmaiden of Rohan. Her name is built from Old English words meaning "horse" and "joy," fitting for the horse-lords. She shows how a warrior name can come from culture, not combat.
  • Hua MulanThe heroine of the Chinese Ballad of Mulan, who takes her father's place in the army. Mulan means magnolia, proof a warrior's name doesn't have to sound violent.
  • Conan the CimmerianRobert E. Howard's barbarian, first published in 1932. Two syllables, a hard C and a homeland instead of a surname: the template for sword-and-sorcery fighters.
  • Brienne of TarthIn George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, a woman knight mocked as "Brienne the Beauty." An ironic epithet can say more than a heroic one.
  • Garrosh HellscreamIn World of Warcraft, an orc warrior and Warchief. Orc surnames there are earned deeds or traits, like Hellscream and Doomhammer, a model for any clan-based fighter.

Good to know

Warrior names: frequently asked questions

What are good female warrior names?

Old Norse and Germanic names often mean battle outright: Hilda (battle), Matilda (mighty in battle), Brynhild (armor and battle), Sigrun (victory rune). Boudica, the Iceni queen who fought Rome, takes her name from a word for victory. For fantasy, try Veyra, Kestara, Tessara or Ysolde. Add an epithet for weight: Hilde Two-Spears, Brienne of Tarth, Lagertha the Shieldmaiden.

What are good male warrior names?

Short, hard names work best: Gunnar (war, warrior), Bjorn (bear), Drustan, Korran, Torvek, Garrick. Ludwig and Louis both mean "famous in battle," and Marcus probably comes from Mars. Add a byname built from something concrete: Ironside, Bloodaxe, Wolfcoat, Two-Spears. Real kings used exactly this pattern. Eric Bloodaxe and Edmund Ironside were both historical figures, which makes "Torvek Ironside" sound earned rather than invented.

What are some cool warrior nicknames?

The best warrior nicknames describe something people saw. History gives the formula: Lionheart (courage), Fairhair (looks), Hardrada (temperament), Bloodaxe (weapon). Try Ironside, Grey Pike, Half-Hand, the Unhorsed, Twice-Born. Ironic nicknames work too: Brienne of Tarth was mocked as "Brienne the Beauty." Avoid nicknames made of three power words strung together. One noun or one deed is enough.

What are good warrior names for games?

Check the limits first. World of Warcraft and Diablo IV allow only 12 letters, with no spaces or numbers. Fold the epithet into one word: Ironside, Wolfcoat, Grimtusk, Brandvek. Strong one-word names include Korran, Torvek, Hilde, Veyra and Brannik. If your first choice is taken, swap a vowel or a letter (Korran to Kurran, Veyra to Vayra) rather than adding numbers. The result still reads as a name.

What names mean warrior?

Gunnar comes from Old Norse words for war and army. Hilda and Matilda carry the Germanic hild, battle. Louis and Ludwig mean "famous in battle." Alexander means "defender of men," and Valeria comes from the Latin for "to be strong." Kratos is the Greek personification of strength and power. Most of these read as ordinary names today, so a reader may not notice the meaning, which keeps it subtle.
